Accessibility
Last reviewed September 25, 2026
This archive exists to be read — by descendants, researchers, and anyone curious about the family’s story. That includes people who use screen readers, keyboard navigation, magnification, captions, or other assistive technology.
Our Standard
GunnsinAmerica.org aims to conform to the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 at Level AA. The site is built as plain, static HTML with no scripts required to read its content, which keeps it compatible with a wide range of browsers and assistive tools.
What the Site Does
- Structure. Pages use headings, landmarks, and lists so screen readers can navigate them, and a “Skip to content” link bypasses the menu.
- Keyboard access. Menus, links, and forms can be reached and operated from the keyboard.
- Text alternatives. Photographs and documents carry alternative text, and captions identify their subjects and sources.
- Readable type. Body text is set at 18 pixels and can be enlarged to 200 percent without loss of content. Layouts adapt to phones and tablets.
- Forms. Every form field has a visible label, and optional fields are marked as optional.
- No surprises. Nothing plays automatically, flashes, or expires on a timer.
- Audio. Recordings added to the Voices collection will be published with a written transcript.
Historical Materials
Much of this archive is made of old documents — handwritten letters, probate records, faded photographs, and printed pages from centuries past. Their images cannot always be made fully accessible on their own. Where we have transcribed a document, the transcription appears with it or in the related article.
If you need a transcription or a fuller description of any document or photograph on the site, ask. We will prioritize it.
Known Limitations
- The Family Database holds more than 7,000 individuals on a single page. It can be slow on older devices and long for screen-reader users to browse; searching by name or place is the quickest way in.
- Some small decorative labels in the site’s gold accent color fall below the recommended contrast ratio. They are being revised.
- Some older gallery images have brief descriptions that we are expanding.
Report a Barrier
If something on this site is hard to use, write to editor@gunnsinamerica.org. Please include the page address, what you were trying to do, and the browser or assistive technology you use. We aim to respond within a week and will provide the content in another format if we cannot fix the page right away.
How This Was Assessed
This statement reflects a self-assessment of the site by its maintainer, using automated checks, keyboard testing, and manual review. It will be updated as the site changes.
