Nearly four centuries later, his descendants had lived through every chapter of the American story. This book follows that single family line from the Great Migration to the present — one family as a lens on four hundred years of American life.

About the book

The Gunns in America traces the family across the Colonial period, the Revolution, westward expansion, the Civil War, and into the modern era. It is built on primary records — parish registers, passenger lists, town and probate records — and on the standard scholarship of the Great Migration, and it is written for readers of American history, not only for the family.

Where the record is uncertain, the book says so. Names, dates, and identities are given as the documents establish them, with tradition and inference kept clearly apart from fact — the same standard that governs this companion site.
